Which Storage Device Can Be Used For PS4 HDD Upgrade

In your computer’s hard drive, there aren’t really any iron nails. A hard drive is a storage device that rapidly records and reads data represented by a collection of magnetized particles on spinning platters. Even if you’re a self-proclaimed computer geek who can build a PC from components, I bet there are parts that you don’t fully understand. PS4 requires a 2.5-inch traditional hard drive, like that used for laptop computers, in order to carry out an internal hard drive upgrade. Sony’s Playstation 4 is without doubt the front-runner in today’s battle of the consoles. It’s been two years since the Xbox One and PS4 debuted here in the U.S.

Know the hard drive inside PS4

Each one of those areas can be independently magnetized (to store a 1) or demagnetized (to store a 0). Magnetism is used in computer storage because it goes on storing information even when the power is switched off. The internal hard drive of PS4 is a simple drive that comes in about 500GB in the older version of PS4 and currently is shipped with 1TB of storage capacity. Most people will never see the inside of a hard drive, hermetically shrouded as it is in its aluminum housing; but you may have noticed an exposed PC (printed circuit) board on the bottom. Likewise, there are few people — geek or otherwise — who don’t know the basis of how a hard drive operates; disks spin and heads read and write data.. Now how much does a PS4 hard drive upgrade cost? but beyond that, how much do you know about the actual operation of a hard drive? We can pretty much call this generation of the console war as over – Microsoft has stopped reporting on its own console sales.

Internal hard drive brands that can integrate into PS4

The mechanical hard drive brands are few in the market, even for computer systems, and they are even fewer when it’s about PS4 storage upgrade. Microsoft realized some months after release that it needed a $400, price-competitive version with the PS4 that lacked the Kinect camera, and has since remedied what was once a bit of a lopsided, apples-and-oranges comparison.

  • There’s just a large shiny, circular “plate” of magnetic material called a platter, divided into billions of tiny areas.
  • If a computer’s CPU is the brain of the PC, the hard drive is its long-term memory–preserving data programs and your operating system even while the machine is asleep or off.
  • You might know, in abstract terms, how a computer restarts — but do you know the actual process?
  • At the last count it had shipped well over 36 million PS4s around the world, with the competing Xbox One from Microsoft has only been able to shift around 20 million consoles.
  • In that time, they’ve both earned their keep as the bearer of current-generation game consoles.

If you magnetize a nail, it stays magnetized until you demagnetize it. This PC board is where the brains of a drive are found, including the I/O controller and firmware, using a good hard drive for PS4 and embedded software that tells the hardware what to do and communicates with your PC.

How to Upgrade PS4 hard drive to a larger one

How do the heads move, for example? But with stellar showings at E3 2015 and Gamescom 2015 Microsoft is doing everything it can to create a bit of a renaissance this year. Since then, both the Xbox One and PS4 have sold pretty well, with the edge on Sony’s side — although January’s $50 price cut for the Kinect-less Xbox One helped Microsoft catch up.

In much the same way, the computerized information (or data) stored in your PC hard drive or iPod stays there even when you switch the power off. When you are going for a larger storage capacity for PS4 HDD upgrade you need to bear in mind that this is not possible for more than 2TB if you’re going to follow the standard upgrade procedure. Otherwise you can go for any larger capacity if you are ready to buy a special accessory for this purpose. You’ll also find the drive’s buffer here. The head must be able to accurately seek a magnetic region that is just a few nanometers wide while the disk spins at thousands of revolutions per minute. Though 2016 sees Sony looking to deliver on the platform exclusive promises that we didn’t see last year. Both companies have released various bundles that may throw the price advantage in one direction or the other depending on whether you want what’s in a given bundle.

The platters are the most important parts of a hard drive. The buffer is a holding tank of memory for data that’s waiting to be written or sent to your PC. That certainly couldn’t be done with a normal motor — and in fact, hard drive heads are moved with a voice coil actuator, much in the same way that a cone in a speaker is moved to make sound. A PS4 HDD upgrade is a good solution for the ones who have lots of data to store internally and don’t wish to go for any external storage solution. And our Nathan Drake looks set to drop one of the most eagerly awaited titles of 2016. That said, how do the two consoles directly compare with each other?

Available hard disk drive form factors for PS4 storage expansion

As the name suggests, they are disks made from a hard material such as glass or aluminum, which is coated with a thin layer of metal that can be magnetized or demagnetized. Two form factors can be used for PS4 HDD upgrade, either Laptop 2.5-inch HDD or Desktop 3.5-inch hard disk drive.. As fast as a modern hard drive is, it’s slow compared to the data flow its interface is capable of handling. By applying tiny amounts of electricity to a wire, a Lorentz force is used to move the hard drive head very accurately. The State of the Gaming Union Address – PlayStation. If you’re thinking about buying one of these two consoles–or just want ammunition for bragging rights–here’s what you need to know.

PS4 internal hard drive replacement

A small hard drive typically has only one platter, but each side of it has a magnetic coating. If you took apart a desktop hard drive, you’d typically see from one to four platters, each of which would be 3.5 inches in diameter. PS4 internal hard drive (HDD) is one of the most changed stock parts of PS4, and in fact Sony permits, or even recommend, it for enthusiast PS4 fans. There are no cogs, and minimal wear and tear — which is one of the reasons why hard drives last for such a long time (compared to other machines that operate under such conditions, anyway). How does a head read data? What Microsoft hasn’t got though is updated hardware and that’s something the chunky, VCR-looking Xbox One needs to change. One note before we get started: Unlike all previous console generations, the PS4 and Xbox One are almost identical hardware-wise.

The specifications of PS4 hard drive

Bigger drives have a series of platters stacked on a central spindle, with a small gap in between them. The diameter of the platters used in hard drives for mobile products vary from as little as 1 inch for drives that are used in music players and pocket hard drives to the 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch platters typically used in notebook hard drives. Knowing the specifications of PS4 stock hard drive is important if you are going to replace it with the same type of hard drive but of another brand. At its most basic, the head is a piece of metal that’s wrapped in wire. Sony has. With an x86 AMD APU at the heart of each, the Sony and Microsoft consoles are essentially PCs — and their hardware specs, and thus relative performance, can be compared in the same way you would compare two x86-based laptops or ARM-based Android tablets.

Storage devices compatible with PS4 HDD Upgrade

It’s not quite that simple — there are different ways of making hard drive heads and encoding data on the magnetic surface — but Faraday’s law of induction is always used. The current 1TB consoles out in the wild are all still running the older CUH-1100 series hardware – something to keep an eye out for if you’re looking to pick up a new Playstation 4 this year. For the PS4 and Xbox One back in 2013, Microsoft and Sony both opted for a semi-custom AMD APU — a 28nm part fabricated by TSMC that features an eight-core Jaguar CPU, paired with a Radeon 7000-series GPU. (We’ll discuss the GPU in the next section.) The PS4 and Xbox One CPUs are virtually identical, except the Xbox One is clocked at 1.75GHz, while the PS4 is at 1.6GHz.

Storing the extra data on the remaining space

The read-write heads are mounted on an electrically controlled arm that moves from the center of the drive to the outer edge and back again. The disks in hard drives used in notebooks spin at 4200, 5400, or 7200 revolutions per minute; desktop drives being manufactured these days spin their disks at 7200 or 10,000 rpm. There are a few compatible hard drives that will fit into PS4 drive bay without any hassle. Just choosing a PS4 hard drive (HDD) for this reason can lead to a better performance if your choice is right. Finally, because the density of data is so high on modern drives — up to 625 billion bits (78GB) per square inch on a 1TB platter — the head must float just 5 or 10 nanometers above the magnetic regions. This CUH-1200 series of consoles has had some pretty major refinements to its build, even if it isn’t the anticipated ‘slim’ version that some were expecting. The Jaguar CPU core itself isn’t particularly exciting.

  1. The platters rotate at up to 10,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) so the read-write heads can access any part of them.
  2. These platters, also known as disks, are coated on both sides with magnetically sensitive material, and stacked millimeters apart on a spindle.
  3. As the head moves over the magnetic fields on the platter, changes in magnetism induce a current that is measured and converted into a binary value.
  4. The new PS4 hardware update, however, has been pretty low-key and is currently only available in 500GB trim.
  5. Read on for our Xbox One-versus-PS4 hardware specs comparison.
  6. There are two read-write heads for each platter, one to read the top surface and one to read the bottom, so a hard drive that has five platters (say) would need ten separate read-write heads.
  7. Also inside the drive is a motor that rotates the spindle and platters.

To reduce wear and tear, they don’t actually touch the platter: there’s a layer of fluid or air between the head and the platter surface. Generally speaking, the faster the spin rate, the faster data can be read. Instead of trying to machine a fixed head that hangs 10nm above the platters, modern hard drive heads float on a layer of air that’s created by the rotation of the drive. Something that’s going to be more divisive though is the way Sony has replaced the touch-sensitive power and eject buttons with actual physical press-buttons. In PCs, Jaguar was used in AMD’s Kabini and Temash parts, which were aimed at older-generation laptops and tablets respectively.

Large games cannot last for long on PS4 stock drive

The most important thing about memory is not being able to store information but being able to find it later. Data is written and read as a series of bits, the smallest unit of digital data. This technique is self-correcting: if the head rises too much, it loses buoyancy and falls back down to its “floating height.” The internal storage drive of PS4 is so limited to the extent that it cannot handle the heaps of movies and games a regular user wishes to download and store internally. Just so you have some idea of how close a head flies over a hard drive platter: 10nm is three times smaller than the transistors used in the latest computer processors — and as hard drive density increases, the floating height will only get lower. Being able to register when they’ve been depressed is sometimes preferable, but I never had a problem with the original’s touchy-feely buttons before. If you’re looking for a reasonable comparison, CPUs based on the Jaguar core are roughly comparable to Intel’s Bay Trail Atom.

an SSD is not a recommended option for PS4 HDD upgrade

More games and movies means more storage space engaged

Imagine storing a magnetized iron nail in a pile of 1.6 million million identical nails and you’ll have some idea how much trouble your computer would get into if it didn’t use a very methodical way of filing its information. That said, when you download lots of games and movies to the internal hard drive of PS4, no wonder it will run out of space in a short period. Bits are either a 0 or a 1, or on/off state if you prefer. Controlled by both a logic board and a controller card, a hard drive receives commands from the computer to read and write data to the platters, which in turn is translated into mechanical movement. And these slightly wobbly, hollow-sounding buttons definitely feel a little cheaper. With eight cores (as opposed to two or four in a regular Kabini-Temash setup), both the PS4 and Xbox One have plenty of CPU power on tap, even if neither measures up to what you can get out of a PC.

When your computer stores data on its hard drive, it doesn’t just throw magnetized nails into a box, all jumbled up together. These bits are represented on a platter’s surface by the longitudinal orientation of particles in the magnetically sensitive coating that are changed (written) or recognized (read) by the magnetic field of the read/write head. When the computer requests that a string of data is written to a hard drive, the logic board instructs the write heads to align the magnetic field of particles that are located on the platters surface. But it’s the internal components which have seen the biggest changes. The large core count allows both consoles to excel at multitasking — important for modern living room and media center use cases.

The data is stored in a very orderly pattern on each platter. Data isn’t just shoveled onto a hard drive raw, it’s processed first, using a complex mathematical formula. This in turn results in data being written to the hard drive, and can be retrieved later by requesting that the read heads detect the polarities of the aligned particles. The actual motherboard itself is smaller and there are fewer memory chips arrayed around the AMD APU at the PS4’s heart. Ultimately, though, despite the Xbox One having a slightly faster CPU, it makes little difference to either console’s relative game performance.

External storage options and how to implement them

Again, by virtue of being an AMD APU, the Xbox One and PS4 GPUs are technologically similar — with the simple difference that the PS4 GPU is larger.

Use a large hard drive capacity for your PS4 HDD swap

Each track is broken up into smaller areas called sectors. Rapidly replacing longitudinal magnetic recording in new drive manufacture is a process called perpendicular magnetic recording. (See visuals of these two technologies.) The external hard drive used for PS4 is no different than those used for other systems, except that you need to know how to format it right for PS4 system to recognize it.. In this type of recording, the particles are arranged perpendicular to the platter’s surface. This file allocation table is also referred to when the system attempts to write new files to a platter, as it keeps track of available space as well as space already in use. Sony has also used a re-designed Blu-ray drive inside it. In PC terms, the Xbox One has a GPU that’s similar to the entry-level Bonaire GPU in the older Radeon HD 7790, while the PS4 is outfitted with the midrange Pitcairn that can be found in the HD 7870.

  • Bits of data are arranged in concentric, circular paths called tracks.
  • The drive’s firmware adds extra bits to the data that allow the drive to detect and correct random errors.
  • This process of reading and writing files is directed through a hard drive’s file allocation table, which determines the physical starting location of a file, and records chains of data that describe the locations of all files on the platters.
  • That doesn’t mean there’s any less GDDR5 memory in the new CUH-1200 series consoles, Sony has simply used higher density Samsung 8Gb chips so it doesn’t need to use as many of the 4Gb memory chips it previously used.

Part of the hard drive stores a map of sectors that have already been used up and others that are still free. (In Windows, this map is called the File Allocation Table or FAT.) When the computer wants to store new information, it takes a look at the map to find some free sectors. In this orientation they can be packed closer together for greater density, with more data per square inch. Which probably goes to explain why you get less drive/disc noise from the new unit too. In numerical terms, the Xbox One GPU has 12 compute units (768 shader processors), while the PS4 has 18 compute units (1,152 shaders). The Xbox One is slightly ahead on GPU clock speed (853MHz vs. 800MHz for the PS4).In short, the PS4’s GPU is — on paper — 50 percent more powerful than the Xbox One. Then it instructs the read-write head to move across the platter to exactly the right location and store the data there.

Go bigger with the new PS4 hard drive replacement

More bits per inch also means more data flowing under the read/write head for faster throughput. The drive spins down a lot quicker and doesn’t seem to have the same aural note as the original device. Replacing the current hard drive of PS4 doesn’t require any deep technical knowledge. You only have to follow a few steps carefully and everything will go fine. The Xbox One’s slightly higher GPU clock speed ameliorates some of the difference, but really, the PS4’s 50-percent-higher compute unit count is a serious advantage for the Sony camp. To read information, the same process runs in reverse. Information is written to and read from both sides of the platters using mechanisms mounted on arms that are moved mechanically back and forth between the center of the platter and its outer rim.

PS4 HDD upgrade is a procedure that many fans are going through to expand the storage capability of their PS4 console. And noise is a key factor in the new design too. Games on the PS4 have considerably more graphics power available, and that shows up in real-world comparisons. With so much information stored in such a tiny amount of space, a hard drive is a remarkable piece of engineering. This movement is called seeking, and the speed at which it’s performed is the seek time. It’s subjectively quieter than the original PS4; almost noiseless when sat under your TV.

Sony allows stock hard drive of PS4 to be replaced easily without any issue

Beyond clock speeds and core counts, though both GPUs are identical. That brings benefits (such as being able to store 500 CDs on your iPod)—but drawbacks too. What the read/write heads are seeking is the proper track–one of the concentric circles of data on the drive. That’s also largely down to the fact the new PS4 runs cooler thanks to its lower power draw, which means the fans need to spin up less when the machine is being taxed. They’re both based on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, and thus support OpenGL 4.3, OpenCL 1.2, and Direct3D 11.2.

Hard drive, SSD or SSHD for PS4?

One of them is that hard drives can go wrong if they get dirt or dust inside them. Tracks are divided up into logical units called sectors. The question keeps getting brought up here—Is a classical HDD better for PS4, or an SSD or SSHD? We have wrote many articles now that includes the answers and we concluded that a classical hard drive is the best PS4 hard drive upgrade option you can go for. It’s really impressive what Sony has managed to do in terms of the power draw of the new CUH-1200 series of consoles, and that has had a knock on effect on the whole device. A tiny piece of dust can make the read-write head bounce up and down, crashing into the platter and damaging its magnetic material. Each sector has its own address (track number plus sector number), which is used to organize and locate data.

At idle the new Playstation 4 uses around 20% less power and around 36% less when running in Rest Mode. This is known as a disk crash (or head crash) and it can (though it doesn’t always) cause the loss of all the information on a hard drive. In the event a drive’s read/write head doesn’t arrive at the track it’s seeking, you may experience what’s called latency or rotational delay, which is most often stated as an average. When in that state the new machine is now drawing only 9W from the wall. A disk crash usually occurs out of the blue, without any warning.

This delay occurs before a sector spins underneath the read/write head, and after it reaches the proper track. The most impressive change though is what’s going on when the PS4 is running at full tilt in game. That’s why you should always keep backup copies of your important documents and files, either on another hard drive, on a compact disc (CD) or DVD, or on a flash memory stick. I ran a graphically-intensive section of The Last of Us Remastered on both consoles and while the original machine is hitting 151W at peak the new PS4 is only hitting 114W at most. That’s a huge saving in power – around 25% less.
