In your computer’s hard drive, there aren’t really any iron nails. A hard drive is a storage device that rapidly records and reads data represented by a collection of magnetized particles on spinning platters. Even if you’re a self-proclaimed computer geek who can build a PC from components, I bet there are parts that you don’t fully understand. PS4 requires a 2.5-inch traditional hard drive, like that used for laptop computers, in order to carry out an internal hard drive upgrade. Sony’s Playstation 4 is without doubt the front-runner in today’s battle of the consoles. It’s been two years since the Xbox One and PS4 debuted here in the U.S.
Know the hard drive inside PS4
Each one of those areas can be independently magnetized (to store a 1) or demagnetized (to store a 0). Something that’s going to be more divisive though is the way Sony has replaced the touch-sensitive power and eject buttons with actual physical press-buttons. In PCs, Jaguar was used in AMD’s Kabini and Temash parts, which were aimed at older-generation laptops and tablets respectively.
Large games cannot last for long on PS4 stock drive
The most important thing about memory is not being able to store information but being able to find it later. Data is written and read as a series of bits, the smallest unit of digital data. This technique is self-correcting: if the head rises too much, it loses buoyancy and falls back down to its “floating height.” The internal storage drive of PS4 is so limited to the extent that it cannot handle the heaps of movies and games a regular user wishes to download and store internally. Just so you have some idea of how close a head flies over a hard drive platter: 10nm is three times smaller than the transistors used in the latest computer processors — and as hard drive density increases, the floating height will only get lower. Being able to register when they’ve been depressed is sometimes preferable, but I never had a problem with the original’s touchy-feely buttons before. If you’re looking for a reasonable comparison, CPUs based on the Jaguar core are roughly comparable to Intel’s Bay Trail Atom.
More games and movies means more storage space engaged
Imagine storing a magnetized iron nail in a pile of 1.6 million million identical nails and you’ll have some idea how much trouble your computer would get into if it didn’t use a very methodical way of filing its information. That said, when you download lots of games and movies to the internal hard drive of PS4, no wonder it will run out of space in a short period. Bits are either a 0 or a 1, or on/off state if you prefer. Controlled by both a logic board and a controller card, a hard drive receives commands from the computer to read and write data to the platters, which in turn is translated into mechanical movement. And these slightly wobbly, hollow-sounding buttons definitely feel a little cheaper. With eight cores (as opposed to two or four in a regular Kabini-Temash setup), both the PS4 and Xbox One have plenty of CPU power on tap, even if neither measures up to what you can get out of a PC.
When your computer stores data on its hard drive, it doesn’t just throw magnetized nails into a box, all jumbled up together. The data is stored in a very orderly pattern on each platter. Data isn’t just shoveled onto a hard drive raw, it’s processed first, using a complex mathematical formula. This in turn results in data being written to the hard drive, and can be retrieved later by requesting that the read heads detect the polarities of the aligned particles. The actual motherboard itself is smaller and there are fewer memory chips arrayed around the AMD APU at the PS4’s heart. Ultimately, though, despite the Xbox One having a slightly faster CPU, it makes little difference to either console’s relative game performance.
External storage options and how to implement them
Again, by virtue of being an AMD APU, the Xbox One and PS4 GPUs are technologically similar — with the simple difference that the PS4 GPU is larger.
Each track is broken up into smaller areas called sectors. Rapidly replacing longitudinal magnetic recording in new drive manufacture is a process called perpendicular magnetic recording. (See visuals of these two technologies.) The external hard drive used for PS4 is no different than those used for other systems, except that you need to know how to format it right for PS4 system to recognize it.. In this type of recording, the particles are arranged perpendicular to the platter’s surface. This file allocation table is also referred to when the system attempts to write new files to a platter, as it keeps track of available space as well as space already in use. Sony has also used a re-designed Blu-ray drive inside it. In PC terms, the Xbox One has a GPU that’s similar to the entry-level Bonaire GPU in the older Radeon HD 7790, while the PS4 is outfitted with the midrange Pitcairn that can be found in the HD 7870.

Part of the hard drive stores a map of sectors that have already been used up and others that are still free. (In Windows, this map is called the File Allocation Table or FAT.) When the computer wants to store new information, it takes a look at the map to find some free sectors. In this orientation they can be packed closer together for greater density, with more data per square inch. Which probably goes to explain why you get less drive/disc noise from the new unit too. In numerical terms, the Xbox One GPU has 12 compute units (768 shader processors), while the PS4 has 18 compute units (1,152 shaders). The Xbox One is slightly ahead on GPU clock speed (853MHz vs. 800MHz for the PS4).In short, the PS4’s GPU is — on paper — 50 percent more powerful than the Xbox One. Then it instructs the read-write head to move across the platter to exactly the right location and store the data there.
Go bigger with the new PS4 hard drive replacement
More bits per inch also means more data flowing under the read/write head for faster throughput. The drive spins down a lot quicker and doesn’t seem to have the same aural note as the original device. Replacing the current hard drive of PS4 doesn’t require any deep technical knowledge. You only have to follow a few steps carefully and everything will go fine. The Xbox One’s slightly higher GPU clock speed ameliorates some of the difference, but really, the PS4’s 50-percent-higher compute unit count is a serious advantage for the Sony camp. To read information, the same process runs in reverse. Information is written to and read from both sides of the platters using mechanisms mounted on arms that are moved mechanically back and forth between the center of the platter and its outer rim.

This movement is called seeking, and the speed at which it’s performed is the seek time. It’s subjectively quieter than the original PS4; almost noiseless when sat under your TV.
Beyond clock speeds and core counts, though both GPUs are identical. That brings benefits (such as being able to store 500 CDs on your iPod)—but drawbacks too. What the read/write heads are seeking is the proper track–one of the concentric circles of data on the drive. That’s also largely down to the fact the new PS4 runs cooler thanks to its lower power draw, which means the fans need to spin up less when the machine is being taxed. They’re both based on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, and thus support OpenGL 4.3, OpenCL 1.2, and Direct3D 11.2.
Hard drive, SSD or SSHD for PS4?

A tiny piece of dust can make the read-write head bounce up and down, crashing into the platter and damaging its magnetic material. Each sector has its own address (track number plus sector number), which is used to organize and locate data.
At idle the new Playstation 4 uses around 20% less power and around 36% less when running in Rest Mode. This is known as a disk crash (or head crash) and it can (though it doesn’t always) cause the loss of all the information on a hard drive. In the event a drive’s read/write head doesn’t arrive at the track it’s seeking, you may experience what’s called latency or rotational delay, which is most often stated as an average. When in that state the new machine is now drawing only 9W from the wall. A disk crash usually occurs out of the blue, without any warning.
This delay occurs before a sector spins underneath the read/write head, and after it reaches the proper track. The most impressive change though is what’s going on when the PS4 is running at full tilt in game. That’s why you should always keep backup copies of your important documents and files, either on another hard drive, on a compact disc (CD) or DVD, or on a flash memory stick. I ran a graphically-intensive section of The Last of Us Remastered on both consoles and while the original machine is hitting 151W at peak the new PS4 is only hitting 114W at most. That’s a huge saving in power – around 25% less.
