Status CES is listed by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and was incorporated in California in December of 1969. History In 1969, young activists raised in San Francisco's Chinatown founded Community Educational Services (CES) to provide academic, employment, and leadership development to recently arrived teenage Chinese immigrants. From 1969 to 1987, CES annually provided over 500 Chinatown youth each year with jobs, job training, English tutoring, homework assistance, and leadership opportunities. Starting in the early 90's, CES programs became increasingly engaged in efforts to aid schools to increase the support they offer to children and youth of all backgrounds. Currently, CES prides itself on operating programs that offer youth a tremendous range of supports and opportunities to develop to their fullest potential. Client Population CES works with disadvantaged youth of all ethnic backgrounds who live in diverse neighborhoods of San Francisco, though the majority of our participants reside or attend school in the Chinatown and North Beach neighborhoods of San Francisco. A large majority of participants come from low income families. Though we target low-achieving youth, we believe in designing programs that would challenge and benefit any youth. CES participants range in age from 5 to 18. Currently, the demographics are: 70% API 15% Latino 10% African American 5% Other Service Level Approximately 2,000 children and youth annually participate in CES programs. An additional 1,000 students benefit from teachers trained by CES. CES youth also operate a youth radio show with an estimated audience in the Bay Area of about 10,000. Presently, CES works with youth residing or attending school in Chinatown and North Beach of San Francisco. However, we have desiged some of our programs to be replicable in other areas. This year, the School of Education at the University of San Francisco has asked the REAL program of CES to conduct teacher training and support. This partnership is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2001. As a result, CES would be affecting teachers and students in schools across the Bay Area. In our ACT ONE youth radio program, youth broadcast advice in Cantonese to parents from a youth perspective. This show reaches an audience estimated to be approximately 20,000 across the Bay Area as well.
